BASH BEATEN IN BASEMENT BATTLE
Bash’s hope of a storming finish to the season fell afoul of the strong westerly
wind and to the lethal boots of Bishop Cleeve’s recent signing from Evesham
United, Aaron Drake whose three goals in sixteen minutes ended and thoughts
of a close encounter of the relegation kind.
From the off, the visitors found difficulty in coping with the hard pitch and failed to
trouble the home keeper despite the swirling wind being to their favour. The
Mitre’s were little better at this stage and it needed the skill of hit-man Drake to
open the scoring on the cusp of halftime.
Any hopes of a Bashley revival when playing against the elements was short
lived when Drake added a second after on 52 minutes after a mix-up in the Bash
defence. The home team continued to press using their height and weight to full
advantage and it was no surprise when Drake’s armada of goals increased to
three when cutting in to score with ease (60). The game deteriorated from this
point with Bishops Cleeve using strong-hand tactics and Bashley losing their
heads. A clash involving Leighton Speechley-Price led to the surprising
conclusion of a red card for LSP whilst the marauding Mitre men got away scot
free despite multiple violations. Brad Morris then received a yellow card for his
pithy comments on the situation.
Bashley, now with all three subs on the pitch, were playing some of their best
football of the game only to be rewarded by Mitre sub, Joe Tustain, adding a
fourth in the last minute of the game.
This was a disappointing display by Bashley especially after the improvements
shown of late but a good win for Bishop’s Cleeve who were rewarded for their
endeavours by being relegated alongside Bashley with Wantage gaining a point
at Sholing. Such is football!
Not happy with his charges display Graham Speechley-Price said; “I can only
apologise to the supporters that travelled, we were poor on Saturday, I feel the
lads let themselves and each other down. Next Saturday I expect them to put
this right as the players are much better than that performance.”
