DEMOLITION JOB TAKES RESERVES TOP
Bashley’s reserve side continued their run of fine form, with a comprehensive
victory over fellow high-flyers Romsey Town on Wednesday night. The win, and
the three points that come with it, takes Bashley to the top of the Wyvern
League Division One (West).
It wasn’t all plain sailing for 90 minutes however, with Town’s Josh Graham rising
highest from a free-kick to power home a header into the top left-hand corner,
giving the visitors the edge in only the second minute.
Bashley kicked on from there, and for the rest of the game there was only going
to be one winner. Matt Head equalised after 14 minutes with a simple tap in
following some excellent work from the in-form James Bergin, before midfielder
Damian Gorman fired the hosts into the lead, having wonderfully controlled a
Matt Head cross with his chest.
Gorman grabbed his second, and Bashley’s third, just a couple of minutes later,
this time capitalising on a poor headed clearance to volley home from 25 yards.
Bashley seemed to be cruising at the break, but they certainly didn’t dwell on
their lead. James Bergin grabbed his first of the night with a calm finish, before
Head doubled his tally for the evening, getting in front of Romsey’s keeper to
calmly flick a James Keith throw into the bottom corner.
The scoring was finally completed after 66 minutes, as Bergin tapped home,
following a peach of a free-kick that had come crashing back off the crossbar.
The Yellows sit a point clear at the top of the table going into Wednesday’s
home tie against East Cowes Vics, knowing that they must keep reproducing
this kind of excellent form to push on.
