TAUNTON TOWN FC 0 BASHLEY 2 (MANAGER'S VIEW)

By Graham Speechley-Price | Sunday 21st September 2014

MANAGER'S VIEW

We travelled to Taunton knowing we needed a performance against a team sat in
second place and on a long unbeaten league run. We changed our shape to the one
that seems to suit the way we want to play and introduced our new signing Clive
Makoni into our squad.

I spoke with the Taunton chairman before the game and was impressed with what
they have done as a club over the last two years. He also informed me of how close
they came to being promoted last year and that they were stronger still this.

They started really strongly and had a lot of possession in our half for the opening
thirty minutes but other than a one on one which our keeper dealt with and a long
range shot we defended well. They were awarded a penalty that the lads were
insistent that the ball was played first and this was dragged wide. In fairness on
another day we could have been 2-0 down.

Our new signings Clive Makoni and Nuno were beginning to cause problems with
their pace and from a resulting corner Mitchell put us one up. For a few minutes after
this Taunton seemed to become unsettled and Clive chased down a back pass that
the keeper appeared favourite for and put us 2-0 up right on half time.

The second half we played down the slope and we seemed to contain them quite
well. Taunton rightly so will feel they deserved something from their first half
performance but I feel earlier games we’ve played that we also deserved more so
maybe it has evened out a little for us. From a footballing point of view our players
worked hard to retain the ball and looked a southern league team today but from an
effort point of view we were immense and with two more top six sides in our next
three games we are going to need all our performances to be at this level.
I must add what a gracious club Taunton are, their supporters shook our hands and
wished us well and their committee work really hard and I’m sure they will be
challenging for honours this season. Hopefully with the league leaders visiting us
this Saturday we can put a similar performance forward in front of our own support.
