BASHLEY FC vs KETTERING TOWN FC - Dave Jose Memorial Trophy
By Bashley Football Club | Mike Cranidge | Saturday 2nd August 2014

POPPIES IN FULL BLOOM (Sunday 3rd August 2014)

In a break from tradition a strong Kettering squad travelled to Bashley to contest the
Dave Jose Memorial Trophy, a match played normally between Bashley and the
Wessex League champions. The invitation to Kettering owes much to a mutual
respect that was forged last season as both clubs clung perilously to the greasy pole
of club survival.

After a delayed start the game kicked off in perfect conditions with Bashley defending
the clubhouse end. The Poppies moved straight into top gear forcing four corners in
the first eight minutes that produced a couple of fine saves from under fire Bash
keeper, Callum Maher. Despite this early onslaught it was Bashley who came closest
to scoring when Shivan Roushbaiani latched on to a misplaced pass by Kettering to
bring a reflex save from the diving Nick Bennion. Kettering continued to attack and
indecision in the Bashley defence left the ball free for Kettering’s No. 9, Ross Oulton
to open the scoring via the far post (18 mins). This stung Bashley into life and they
nearly equalised when an inner-box header and near post flick were both cleared off
the line followed by a long range shot from Brad Morris that went close. The Poppies
came back strongly and were rewarded a disputed penalty in the 28th minute that
was fittingly saved by Callum Maher diving smartly to his left. Penalty taker, Ryan
Walker, however, was quick to make amends by heading in from close range just two
minutes later leaving a frustrated Bashley appealing for a push that led to the goal
chance.

At the other end, Leighton Speechley-Price latched onto a misplaced ball and drove
for goal only to be stopped as he entered the Kettering box by a shirt-pull noticed by
the assistant referee. The resultant free-kick rewarded by the referee was, to the
chagrin of the Bashley bench, placed outside of the area! The resultant kick drifted
past the post. To pour sodium chloride into the wound, Kettering drove forward and
slack defending by the retreating Bashley let in Ross Oulton to claim his second and
Kettering’s third goal. The first half ended with Kettering on top.

Both teams rang the changes at the start of the second half with for Bashley: Richard
Morse making way for Connor Cullingford, Chris Hall for Lee Taylor and Aaron Dunne
replacing Matt Head. Kettering continued to press forward but this time Bash were
looking more assured in defence. Ryan Brading was next for the showers giving way
to fiery youngster Mitchell Speechley-Price whose cameo role was short-lived when
his fierce tackle brought out the hand-bags and when the dust from the mêlée settled
the Bashley bench was asked by the referee, rightly or wrongly, to withdraw young
Mitch from the proceedings with Husam Aurow taking his place. The game continued
at a less frantic pace with Kettering always dangerous and Bashley looking more
composed in defence and general play. In the end Kettering were pleased with their
win and Bashley can take comfort from a goalless second half. In all, a satisfactory
game for both teams with Kettering taking the silverware and enjoying a good pre-
season workout whilst the Bashley youngsters will have gained much from the
experience.

After the game, Kettering Chairman, Ritchie Jeune, thanked the Bashley executive for
their hospitality and said that they would host a return match next pre-season and
that he hoped this would become a regular event. The family and friends of David
Jose, who kindly sponsored the game, selected goalkeeper Callum Mahar as the
Bashley Man of the Match.
